Footbridge Closures update
Published: 25 February 2026
The community council is working closely with the Rights of Way department in Monmouthshire County Council to resolve the problems which have led to the footbridge closures.
Members of council and the Clerk attended a meeting with Countryside Access Team on Monday 19 January 2026 in Tal-y-Coed. Three River Trothy footbridges are closed: Sunnybank will be replaced first in 2026/27, while New House Farm and Tal-y-Coed are more complex and targeted for 2027/28. In the meantime, the Council supports improving alternative routes and forming a local volunteer group to help maintain footpaths. The Clerk reported that residents will be invited to take part in a survey of a footpath between Llantilio and Tal-y-Coed in April/May.
The closed footbridge over the Trothy at Tal-y-Coed has made it more difficult for residents of Llantilio Crossenny to walk to the local pub (The Halfway) at Tal-y-coed using footpath 369/57/3. The community council has identified that the alternative route (369/291/1) avoids the closed footbridge but this route is less well maintained and there is no fingerpost at the point where it joins the B4233.
